*SHINZEN YOUNG is an American who has trained extensively in Asian monasteries. He teaches a very clear, accessible contemporary form of vipassana meditation (also commonly called mindfulness meditation or insight meditation), based on his years of experience as a Buddhist monk in Japan and his 30 years of teaching & leading retreats across the country & in Canada. His recordings are featured in Sounds True (Break-Through Pain & Break-Through Emotions among them) and his well-known Science of Enlightenment tape series has garnered much critical praise. Recordings of his talks & meditations are played on KPFK (in Los Angeles) late night Thursdays -- along with Ram Dass, Alan Watts & Thich Naht Hahn. Shinzen founded the Vipassana Support Institute (with Shirley Fenton) for the purpose of supporting people with their meditation practice. Shiznen personally trains and works with all his facilitators to teach his techniques.
